Why Axis Exists
The problem with productivity tools and why we built something different.
Most productivity tools are built around the same premise: if you organize your tasks well enough, you'll be productive. Make a list. Prioritize. Check things off.
But anyone who's tried this knows it doesn't work that way. You can have a perfect task list and still have a terrible day — because productivity isn't about managing tasks. It's about managing energy, attention, and cognitive capacity.
The Problem#
Here's what I noticed in my own work: some days I'd crush my to-do list and feel great. Other days I'd look at the same list and feel paralyzed. The tasks hadn't changed — I had changed. My energy, my focus, my cognitive state.
No tool was designed for this. Calendars show when. Task managers show what. Nothing shows how — the cognitive dimension of work.
The Insight#
Work isn't one thing. Writing code is fundamentally different from answering emails, which is different from brainstorming, which is different from a strategy meeting. Each requires a distinct type of mental engagement — a different mode of thinking.
When you schedule the right mode at the right time, work feels effortless. When you mismatch — trying to do deep creative work after a draining meeting, or scheduling admin tasks during your peak focus hours — everything feels harder than it should.
What Axis Does#
Axis is built around this insight. It helps you:
- Classify your work by cognitive mode, not just category
- Track how different modes affect your energy over time
- Design your week to match your natural rhythms
- Learn from your patterns with AI that gets smarter the more you use it
This isn't about working more. It's about working with your brain instead of against it.
The Vision#
We believe the future of productivity is cognitive. Not more features, more integrations, more automations — but a deeper understanding of how you personally do your best work.
Axis is the tool I wish I'd had years ago. I hope it helps you too.
