The Science of Cognitive Modes
Research behind why different types of work require different mental states.
The 16 cognitive modes in Axis are not arbitrary. They start from research on attention, executive function and recovery — and then your own feedback is what makes them right for you. Research is where the defaults come from; it is not where they end up.
Attention Is Not Monolithic#
Research in cognitive psychology distinguishes between several types of attention:
- Focused attention — sustained concentration on a single task (Deep Build)
- Divided attention — managing multiple inputs simultaneously (Internal meetings)
- Creative attention — diffuse, associative thinking (Creative Open)
- Executive attention — planning, decision-making, self-regulation (Deep Strategy)
These engage measurably different neural networks, which is the part of this literature that holds up best — and it is why a day of back-to-back strategy calls leaves you differently tired than a day of heads-down building.
The Energy Dimension#
Modes differ in what they cost you, not just in what they involve. Four findings are solid enough to build defaults on — each stated with the confidence it actually has:
- Mental effort accumulates, and recovery is not instant. The pattern is consistent; the mechanism is contested. The ego-depletion account that dominated this literature for a decade failed two large multi-lab replications, so Axis builds on the observation rather than on the explanation.
- Switching costs something. Attention does not move cleanly — part of it stays with whatever you just left. The widely quoted "40% loss" is a worst-case maximum from lab conditions with an unfinished task and no closure plan, not a universal rate. The direction is reliable; the number is not.
- Recovery is part of the work, not the absence of it. Which is why Axis inserts buffers after high-drain modes rather than offering them as something you have to remember.
- Timing is personal. Chronotype shifts when each kind of thinking works best, and the spread between people is wider than most studies admit — so Axis learns your peak hours from your feedback instead of assuming them.

- Sequence work intelligently — avoid scheduling high-drain modes back-to-back
- Protect peak hours — match your most demanding cognitive work to your highest-energy windows
- Balance the portfolio — ensure your week has enough recovery to sustain deep work
Axis's Approach#
Axis uses 16 modes to capture the full spectrum of cognitive work. This isn't complexity for its own sake — it's precision. The difference between "Internal Light" (a casual standup) and "Internal Heavy" (a high-stakes strategy review) matters enormously for energy management.
Over time your feedback replaces those defaults with your own numbers. That is the part that matters: the research gets you a sensible starting week, and your behaviour is what makes it yours.
